Sturgeon Moon Sunset & Full Moon Hike

August 28 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Free

Join us for a sunset hike on the night of the Full Sturgeon Moon — and one of the most remarkable full moons of 2026. Tonight’s Sturgeon Moon rises alongside a deep partial lunar eclipse, during which nearly 96% of the moon’s surface passes through Earth’s shadow. As we ascend Cowles Mountain via the less-crowded service road route, the Sturgeon Moon will be climbing above the eastern horizon — emerging from its eclipse in deep amber and burnt orange, fuller and more luminous than a typical full moon night.

The Sturgeon Moon takes its name from the Native American tradition of the Great Lakes, where lake sturgeon — the largest freshwater fish in North America — were most abundantly caught in late August. It is a moon of abundance and fullness. A fitting sky to gather and move under together.

What to Expect

  • Pace — leisurely to moderate, suitable for most fitness levels
  • Distance — approximately 2.6 miles round trip via the service road route
  • Terrain — wide gravel service road, gradual and stable ascent

What to Bring

  • Headlamp or flashlight (red light mode recommended)
  • Good hiking or trail shoes
  • Layers — it cools down quickly after sunset
  • Water — at least 1 liter per person
  • Optional — hiking poles, camera, small snack

Special Note
The partial lunar eclipse peaks in the early hours of August 28 — by the time we hike that evening the moon will be rising full and recovering from its eclipse, carrying that characteristic deep warm glow on its surface. This is a sky event worth showing up for. We hike as a group. No one will be left behind in the dark.

RSVP so we know to look out for you.
